Melba Scott and Mary Johnson, sisters From The Heber Springs Portraits, 1939-46. Gift, 1977.
Mike Disfarmer
Contemporary with Walker Evans, and possessing the same tradition in rural portraiture, Mike Disfarmer's photographs are part of the heritage of Arkansas, and specifically the small town of Heber Springs (population of 3,800 in 1976). In addition to an archive of nearly 3,000 original negatives, the Arkansas Arts Center has nearly 100 of these in printed form. In 1976, the Arts Center helped make possible the production of Disfarmer: The Heber Springs Portraits, 1939-1946.
