Lesson Objective: students will learn about abstraction; students will respond creatively to the landscape.
Pearl Schmidt's painting is an abstract landscape. Abstraction is an artistic style in which the artwork does not literally represent the way an object or scene looks, but rather captures the sense or feel of the subject.
Visit http://www.metmuseum.org/works_of_art/viewone.asp?dep=21... to view Constantin Brancusi's Bird in Space, an abstract sculpture which is intended to describe the feeling of a bird in flight.) Discuss with your students whether or not they can tell that this painting is a landscape. Draw attention to the areas that are reminiscent of water or mountains or trees - talk about how shape, color and texture can create the sense of landscape elements without them having to exactly mirror the way something looks.
Materials:
Paper
Paint
Take students outside to create an abstract landscape painting. Encourage them to pay attention to how things move rather than how they look (the wind in the tree's leaves, rather than the leaves themselves). Display their paintings in the classroom.
