FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Japanese Ceramics on view at Arkansas Arts Center
(LITTLE ROCK, AR) - The Arkansas Arts Center is hosting the exhibition Shaped with a Passion: The Carl A. Weyerhaeuser Collection of Japanese Ceramics from the 1970s (organized by Smith Kramer Fine Art Services) from October 3 through November 23, 2003 in the Jeannette Edris Rockefeller Gallery of the Arkansas Arts Center.

One hundred twenty pieces from Weyerhaeuser's collection of approximately 300 works of contemporary Japanese ceramics will be on view. All of the works were purchased between the spring of 1972 and summer of 1973 directly through visits to the potter's studios. This collection represents a unique snapshot of the world of Japanese ceramics at a time when few other collectors or museums were acquiring such work.

Items in the exhibition range from sake cups to large-scale sculptures. Established and famous artists represented are Uno Soyo, Kondo Yuzo, Raku Kichizaemon, Kawai Kanjiro, Shimizu Uichi and Shoji Hamada. Many of these artists are now considered "Living National Treasures" in Japan.
