FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Arkansas Arts Center to Host Public Lecture on Ancient Roman Villas
(LITTLE ROCK, AR) -
Thomas Noble Howe, Ph.D., Professor of Architectural History and Design at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas will present a free, public lecture titled “Powerhouses of Rome: The Villas of Ancient Roman Stabiae” on Thursday, February 17, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. The lecture will take place in the Arkansas Arts Center Lecture Hall, 9th and Commerce Streets.
The lecture is held in conjunction with the exhibition "In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite,” which arrives at the Arkansas Arts Center on Friday, February 11, 2005. Howe, the Coordinator General of the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation, an international foundation charged with developing one of the largest archaeological parks in Europe on the site of the ancient Roman villas of Stabiae near Pompeii, will discuss the villas and their art represented in the exhibition. He will also illustrate how these great villas functioned, not just as places of luxury but as crucial tools in the power culture of the Roman elite.
The remarkable art and architecture, combined with culinary arts, set a stage where powerful Romans managed hundreds of clients in a private setting that was little different from the Forum. The elite coordinated the best artists and architects to create a lifestyle surrounded by mythic beauty.
A wine and cheese reception and will be held prior to the lecture at 6 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, April 3, 2005. Please call 501-372-4000 or visit www.arkarts.com for more information.
