FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Internationally known blacksmith featured at Arkansas Arts Center program
(LITTLE ROCK, AR) -
The Arkansas Arts Center Friends of Contemporary Craft will host a discussion with internationally acclaimed artist and blacksmith Tom Joyce as part of the Conversation series on Saturday, May 14, 2005 at 6 p.m. The event will take place in the Arkansas Arts Center Lower Lobby and Lecture Hall, 9th and Commerce Streets.
Joyce will discuss his vast collection of work which includes forged sculpture, architectural ironwork, vessels and public art. He makes his art from pieces he collects, enabling him to integrate parts of the past into the present. Joyce said, "My journey through this medium is sustained by simple daily practice. From the origination of ideas, to the forging of individual elements, to placing the finished piece, my work is as susceptible to failure as to success. Attentiveness to the process is all that's held in balance between the two."
A 2003 recipient of the MacArthur Foundation "genius grant," his works are seen in the collections and exhibitions of museums such as The Museum of Art and Design, NYC; Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; Detroit Institute of Arts and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Cost for the "Conversation" is $15, which includes a light dinner. For more information or to make reservations, call 501-396-0357.
