Selections from the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection
Though not a native of Arkansas, Andrew Kilgore has documented many of its citizens with compassion and enthusiasm. This exhibition contains highlights from three photographic series by Kilgore: We Drew a Circle, Fayetteville Townsfolk, and Developing Character at the Arkansas Rep. Each of these series provides an intimate glimpse into a community of people within the state of Arkansas.
Andrew Kilgore was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1940. After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and attending seminary school, he went on to work as a Protestant minister in Vermont, a Peace Corp. Volunteer in India, and a Mobility Instructor in Texas for blind and disabled children. Then, in 1973, Kilgore was hired by the University of Arkansas to develop a photography program. He worked as the photography instructor in the Art Department until 1977, when he retired from teaching to work as a commercial photographer. Kilgore has since produced numerous photographic essays and exhibits.
