Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection: Gift of Peter Miller, the Group, Inc., 1978.

Mike Disfarmer's rural portrait photography has developed an international reputation and is held among the ranks of Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange.

This selection of 29 photographs from a collection of 3,000 original glass negatives is part of the heritage of Arkansas. This collection of haunting photographs represents the artist's ability to capture an intimate glimpse of the citizens of Heber Springs and Cleburne County, Arkansas during the early 1940s. It provides a window into the hardships and dignity of lives of rural Americans.
