Learn the fundamentals - and then some - of digital SLR photography in this interactive session. Get to know your camera - from the basic 'bells and whistles' to more advanced functions and operations including lens options, flashes and accessories. Students will learn and practice the critical components of exposure including shutter speed, aperture, ISO and lighting. We'll explore the principles of composition and discover the creative techniques that make a photograph powerful. Students will also learn basic photo editing skills in the computer lab to practice preparing images - whether for the web, Facebook or a gallery-worthy print. Class combines lab & studio time with field trips for hands-on instruction and learning.

What does it take to make good 'people pictures'? Photographing people can often be intimidating, but with the right approach it can be very comfortable and rewarding for both the subject and the photographer. In this class, students will explore the ingredients of a frame-worthy portrait, including finding a setting that compliments the subject, bringing out character and personality, and maximizing existing settings and lighting conditions - both indoors and out. This class is ideal for anyone interested in improving their 'people picture' skills - from formal portraits to relaxed candids. To view Heather's work, please visit
